The Paolina Ledge

HIKE IN A GRAND, SOLITARY, AND RUGGED ENVIRONMENT

A PATH SOMETIMES EXPOSED, LONG, AND CHALLENGING

REMANTS OF WORLD WAR I POSITIONS

A challenging ledge trail on the Tofane

A trail along an exposed ledge, a spectacular mountaineering route in the footsteps of the Great War – this is the “Paolina” and more. This route unfolds in a majestic and evocative environment, largely tracing the wartime paths of Italian and Austrian soldiers who wrote a somber chapter of our history up here.

The trail traverses the western slopes of Tofana di Mezzo and, notably, Tofana di Dentro. During the war, it served as access to the Masarié and Orte de Tofana positions. Rediscovered in the mid-1960s by the “Cortina Squirrels“, over the years, the route has been affected by landslides, and today, trail markers are almost entirely gone. More famous than the Jelinek and Polin Ledges, both on the Tofane, it is undoubtedly a “must” for experienced hikers.

The starting point is Forcella Fontananegra (Giussani Hut), ascending shortly on the Cengia Sabelli, then continuing to Potofana, Forcella Ra Valles, Canalon de Ra Ola, and descending into the lush Val di Fanes. A couple of small snowfields to cross, scree fields, and lunar landscapes.

I emphasize that this is a route as spectacular as it is challenging, exclusively reserved for experienced hikers. The habit of walking on exposed ledges and rocky slopes covered with debris with a steady pace is fundamental!
